Volunteering

If you have some time on your hands, it’s worth thinking seriously about doing some volunteer work. There are obvious benefits for the organisation you decide to help, but there are some very real benefits for you.

Joining other volunteers working on a project of some kind can be a great way to meet new people in a friendly, co operative atmosphere. You benefit by knowing that you’re making a useful contribution to the community and there’s generally a positive feeling of shared effort and teamwork.

As well as the social and community benefits, volunteering gives many people a renewed sense of purpose. It can also be a way to develop your work skills and can lead to some kind of paid work.

There are literally hundreds of organisations where you can work as a volunteer. You could start by asking your local Council’s Community Services Department what local organisations are looking for volunteers. If you get on the web, go to Google and type “volunteering” - you will find plenty of organisations looking for people. We have listed below some web addresses of organisations who can assist you to find some volunteer work. You can even volunteer to work overseas
