Robin Hood

After seeing what seems like dozens of Robin Hood movies over the years, I was a bit apprehensive turning up for yet another version. However the combination of Ridley
Scott and the 2 Australian leading actors gave me confidence that the movie would be well done.
I’m glad I went. It was not your traditional Robin Hood story. Robin wasn’t even the character he’s normally portrayed as and – shock, horror! No one was wearing green tights!
In keeping with the recent Hollywood trend, the story went backwards to the days before Robin Hood was Robin Hood. We are introduced to the lead characters as they head home from the Crusades and are busy killing Frenchmen as they go. Our heroes get involved in some dangerous impersonation and arrive back in England bearing some bad news. There is the normal nasty politicking in the English Court which sets the scene for the rest of the movie.
Our hero doesn’t actually become Robin Hood till near the end of the movie. In the meantime, it’s a good yarn with clear cut villains, who are consistently unpleasant. As you would expect from the team that brought you “Gladiator”, the special effects and battle scenes are very realistic and there is no shortage of action.
Both Cate Blanchett and Russell Crowe were good in their roles and I can understand why Robin fell for her. Personally I thought the director went overboard when Cate (Maid Marion) turned up at the final battle in full knight’s armor and took on the chief villain.
It’s certainly worth a trip to the movies
